Sail Training Courses

Boatability is pleased to be able to offer the following sailing courses, thanks to our partnership with Sunsail. All our Sailing courses are to the RYA standard and taught by qualified instructors from a recognised RYA Sail Training School.
These courses are suitable for those with little or no experience, who prefer sailing to powerboating!
RYA Competent Crew Course (5 Days)
Aimed at the beginner, introducing you to cruising at sea under sail, whilst providing you with the skills to become an active and integral team member of the crew. You will cover approximately 100 miles at sea and 4 hours of night sailing. During this course you will develop a sound knowledge and understanding of the yacht and all the basic sailing techniques, including rope work, mooring and casting off.
5 Day ICC Course
Our International Certificate of Competence (ICC) course is an internationally recognised certificate that qualifies the holder to sail in countries where formal qualifications are required (e.g. Croatia).
The course is aimed at those with little sailing experience and designed to ensure that you are a competent skipper of your own yacht. It takes 5 days to complete and includes 5 days sailing and 5 nights staying aboard the yacht. On day 5 you take a written and practical assessment, which on successful completion of you will have proved you have enough experience to sail on a level 1 charter or flotilla.
RYA Day Skipper Course
Our RYA Day Skipper Practical course is designed to enable you to skipper a yacht by day in familiar waters. You will gain the qualification and experience needed to set sail aboard your own yacht, on a Yacht Charter or Flotilla holiday to many of Sunsails' worldwide destinations.
Following this 5-day Day Skipper Practical course you will gain experience in deck work, navigation and passage making, as well as the confidence to skipper under sail and power. It will also teach you basic practical skippering techniques, which will enable you to skipper a yacht on short coastal passages by day, in both tidal and non-tidal waters. As a skipper you are responsible for the management of your vessel, therefore the course also includes elements of meteorology, engine checks, passage planning, preparing the yacht for sea and rules of the road.
The minimum pre-course experience required is 5 days sailing and living onboard, 100 miles logged and 4 hours night sailing. You will also need to have completed your Day Skipper Theory course prior to taking your practical, or have knowledge equivalent to this level.
RYA Coastal Skipper Course
Our Coastal Skipper Practical Course is the next step up from your Coastal Skipper/Yacht Master Theory training, providing you with the knowledge to safely and assertively skipper a yacht on more demanding passages.
Upon completion of the Coastal Skipper practical course you will be an advanced and confident skipper, with good boat handling and navigational skills in tidal waters. You will also be able to clearly understand chart work and electronic techniques, demonstrating strong leadership and sailing skills by day and night.
